basic computer skill training

What are basic computer skills?

Basic computer skills refer to your ability to perform fundamental tasks on a computer. This can include understanding certain software, applications, programs, tools and more. Computer skills fall into two categories: software and hardware. Hardware refers to the computer's operation, whereas software involves the use of various programs and applications.

The type of computer skills you'll be expected to have will depend on your industry. Typically, employers specify what types of computer skills they want their employees to have in their job postings.

While this goes without saying, before you learn any specialized technical skills, at the very least you need a fundamental understanding of how to use a computer—ideally, both a Windows or Mac. There are many free resources online. Sites like Lifewire, for example, are very helpful in providing comprehensive tutorials.

These days, it’s pretty common to find free (or affordable) computer training events. Check with your local library, community center or community college to see what they have to offer. In addition, you can take free Mac courses at an Apple store near you.
